The year her bum went psycho
In March, London's The Sun sponsored a campaign to have Kylie Minogue's rear end heritage-listed, preserved for "posteriority" on the grounds that it's an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The tabloid invited its readers to lobby the government to make sure Kylie's "bum remains in safe hands — by turning it into a national institution".
The heritage listing has not yet been confirmed but The Sun is no doubt still hoping for the best — if only because the resulting story would provide another excuse to run a circulation-boosting photo of Kylie bending over.
Last week, Madame Tussaud's unveiled its new Kylie exhibit, a model of the singer on all fours with backside provocatively raised. Such is the English fixation that chat show host Johnny Vaughan recently commented that "if an alien landed on Earth he would think Kylie's arse is the world's leader".

OK, it has to count for something. Though Robbie Millen, writing for The Times, recently observed that "her bottom will go the way of the Empire ... it will decline and fall", you'd have to bet it has a few years left in it yet. Kylie herself is clearly aware of its power. She's been selling underwear at her shows for years. She told the Sunday People, in her usual modest fashion, that her bottom "does what it's meant to do and it's in fairly good shape".
Spinning Around, Kylie's first No 1 in a decade, was aided, certainly, by
The Hotpants Video and a certain men's mag photoshoot where she appeared on the
cover knickerless, in emulation of the famed tennis-girl-with-no-knickers Athena
poster. The tabloids went beserk. Kylie was reported to be miffed, said they'd
"air-brushed" them off, sued for damages. Nonsense, of course. Kylie
approved the covershot herself. "I was certainly up for it," she says,
"I absolutely knew, I thought it would be... a bit of a cheek. Hihih!"
It was the shot inside that was "fake".
"My skirts were flying up in the breeze," she guffaws, "and they painted my G-string off. They're in every other shot, you just can't see them. I have to have a laugh, I was looking through and... 'They've taken my knickers off!' I said it out loud! I just think it's funny, really. It's not like some of those magazine covers where the girls are literally... ( Smooths hands along inside thighs and flings legs wide open ) Oh my God. I can get quite prudish."

Nothing You See Is Real
In fact, neither is this article.So the nice men at GQ have given me another article to write by taking liberties with Kylie's bottom. Before you all start making up your own stories (stoppit at the back there), I'm talking about airbrushing. The new issue of the magazine features the gorgeous Ms. Minogue on the cover in a recreation of the famous Athena poster of the tennis player lifting her skirt to scratch her bum (when I describe it like that it seem a whole lot less sexy). The newspapers gleefully reported that Kylie was upset with the cover because when she had posed for the picture she was wearing a g-string. Before the image made it to the cover, the magazine's picture editor saw fit to remove the signs of any underwear with a computer. The full size, high quality image that we see on the shelves of the magazine stores never actually happened and does not represent Kylie's modesty or her taste in underwear.

The shorts cost 50p in an Oxfam shop two years ago .
But they're now expected to raise hundreds of pounds when they go on sale at the auction on 18 April , 2002 .

Kylie Minogue's legendary gold hotpants have been insured for a staggering $1.9 million (GBP1 million) - even though her stylist paid next to nothing for them.
The figure-hugging garment is currently on display in a bullet proof cabinet as part of an exhibition of the SLOW singer's stage attire in her home city of Melbourne, Australia.
Every item in the show had to be valued for insurance purposes and the hotpants came out top of the list.
An exhibition insider says, "The insurance company quoted GBP1 million for her gold hotpants. The high figure reflects the danger of them being nicked.
"They are one of the most famous items of pop memorabilia in the world, are impossible to replace and represent a slice of pop history from Australia's biggest export. A pop collector or Kylie fan would love to own them."
WILLIAM BAKER picked up the hotpants at a London market for Kylie to wear in the video for her comeback single SPINNING AROUND in 2000.
